The Take

Two historic rivals will clash again when Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv hosts CSKA Moscow. Maccabi (10-14) has lost three games in a row and is fading fast in the playoff hunt. However, Coach Sfairopoulos's squad won its last two home games and will play two games at Menorah Mivtachim Arena this week – as well as two of the next three after that. Second-place CSKA (17-8) edged Olympiacos Piraeus on the road last week, but had lost four of its previous five games before that. With the roster refreshed and healthier, CSKA will look to regain its once-dominant form.

Last time they met

CSKA outlasted Maccabi 76-72 in Round 2 at Megasport Arena in the Russian capital. Mike James scored 25 points and Will Clyburn added 19 to lead the 2019 champs. The two combined for 25 of their team's 31 fourth-quarter points to carry CSKA to victory. Scottie Wilbekin led Maccabi with 20 points and 5 assists and Ante Zizic tallied 13 points and 9 rebounds.

 Marquee matchup

Star guards Scottie Wilbekin (15.4 ppg., 4.4 apg.) and Mike James (20.5 ppg., 5.8 apg.) were their respective team's top-scorers the last time they met as well as for the season. Both have dealt with adversity recently with a thumb injury plaguing Wilbekin and a death in the family sending James to the United States. Both teams will hope to have their star guards in top shape for this game.

 Keys to victory: Maccabi

CSKA has been one of the most aggressive teams in the league; it leads the competition in fouls drawn (22.3 per game), free throws attempted (21.3) and made (16.4), rebounds (37.1), offensive rebounds (13.2), all of which has helped Coach Itoudis's team to the top of the scoring charts (83.6 ppg.). Maccabi must match that aggressive approach and flex its muscle on the glass to snatch a critical home win.

 Keys to victory: CSKA

The visitors are ranked second-from-bottom in assists (15.6 apg.) and steals (6.0 spg.) and only one spot higher than that in two-point shooting (50.8%). When at its best, the Maccabi attack is tough to crack and CSKA will need to move the ball well to find open shots and score when those shots arrive. A high-assist tally would be a great sign for CSKA in Tel Aviv.

Head Coaches

SFAIROPOULOS, IOANNIS
Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv
"CSKA has always been a primary candidate for the Final Four, and this year they have the least amount of losses with Barcelona, which shows their quality and experience scoring the most points per game. We'll need to play well defensively, control the game's rhythm, and not let them play their style of basketball. Additionally, we'll need to execute well offensively. Once again, we are delighted to have 300 supporting fans in the stands, and we are anxious to see them again fighting with us for this win."
ITOUDIS, DIMITRIS
CSKA Moscow
"Maccabi is chasing a spot among the playoff teams. They are a very energetic team, they depend a lot on the open court, they force turnovers with switching defense or playing big ball, they try to put pressure on you. It is always difficult at Tel Aviv. But we have all components and the mindset to go there, play good game and try to win."

Players

ZIZIC, ANTE
Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv
"It's been a challenging season because of COVID-19, and everything is much tougher, not just around basketball but in the day-to-day life. CSKA has been doing a great job this season, playing really good on both ends of the court, and it will be a tough game, but I don't know how different it will be from the last matchup."
ERIC, MICHAEL
CSKA Moscow
"It will be another good and challenging chance for us to prove ourselves that we have a good team. On this travel we have a double week so we gotta prepare for one game at a time."
