The Take

Real Madrid showed character and focus in Game 1 to survive a Panathinaikos OPAP Athens comeback, but the Greens also demonstrated they can play under pressure away from home. The home-court factor helped Madrid this time and Los Blancos will look to make good use of it again before the series travels to Athens for Game 3.

Game 1 recap

Real Madrid held off a stirring comeback from Panathinaikos OPAP Athens to record a thrilling 75-72 home victory in the opening game of their playoffs series. Madrid was in front nearly all night and led by 14 early in the third quarter, but the Greens did not give up and roared in front 66-72 with 4 minutes left. Jeffery Taylor paced the winners with 13 points, Fabien Causeur scored 12. Nick Calathes recovered from a slow start to lead all scorers with 17 points for the Greens.

Marquee matchup

Jeffery Taylor and DeShaun Thomas had their moments of protagonism in the opening game and many eyes will be on them again to see how they fare in this next round in the series. Taylor led Madrid with his 13 points while Thomas helped the Greens with 12 points but missed the shot that could have sent the game to overtime.

Keys to victory: Real Madrid

The hosts won the first game by the skin of their teeth but if one good thing comes out of that win is that now the team knows they can handle playoffs pressure. Panathinaikos had a solid 9 of 20 form the arc, so Madrid will have to watch for those open shots from long range, as well as the rebounds, as the guests managed to win the battle under the glass 38-39.

Keys to victory: Panathinaikos

Panathinaikos was on the verge of upsetting the defending champs in Madrid, and that's a good sign for future games. The problem for the Greens was that Madrid was consisten from the free throws line with 19 of 22 attempts, and in such close games, that is a huge factor. Also, Panathinaikos has the best passer in the league in Nick Calathes and got stuck at 10 assists, the third lowest mark for the team this season.

Head Coaches

LASO, PABLO
Real Madrid
"We expect a totally different game in which we will have to play better. We must improve everything in our game. Rebounts, one-on-one defense, controlling the tempo of the game, the percentage from the arc... There are many things to improve if we want to in Game 2. Calathes generates many plays both in points and assists, in defense and even rebounds. His numbers are good because he can do many things. We know that the defense on Calathes has to be done by some players, it's hard to think who can stop him. We have different players with different attributes to guard him: Taylor is taller and more athletic, Campazzo is smaller and uncomfortable, Causeur always plays good defense, Carroll can look out for him sometimes and we can even have Rudy on that task. You cannot stop one player with one player. You need to make a team effort."
PITINO, RICK
Panathinaikos OPAP Athens
"It's playoff basketball, so you have to get over to the next game. It was certainly a winnable game. We were up 3 with a minute and change to go. It's winnable. Any time you lose a game like that, you're disappointed, but you move on. This is playoff basketball. The second game is always tougher because they realize that if they get a split, they gotta go into Greece [and win]. So you are going to see a tough team tomorrow night as far as Real Madrid. We understand that if they go 2-0, they have a distinct advantage. There is gonna be a Game 5. We understand that. It's two highly-motivated teams. You don't have to worry about motivation in the playoffs. If you do, you have a bad team."

Players

PREPELIC, KLEMEN
Real Madrid
"Panathinaikos is a tough team that goes 100 percent in every play, they play defense to their limit and they do it pretty good. We won Game 1 but we must think about what lays ahead. We'll give it our best shot again because if we get to 2-0 it will be easier for us to play in Athens I think. We must play better than in Game 1 however. We didn't play a bad game but it wasn't our best night either. We will have to work hard and well if we want to win with an ending not as close as the one in Game 1."
