Maciej Lampe - Unics Kazan (photo unics.ru)Unics Kazan took a big step towards advancing to the second stage of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Qualifying Rounds with a 72-84 victory over GasTerra Flames on Tuesday at the Martini Plaza in Groningen, Netherlands. The Dutch champs kept it close for the first half and played hard throughout the second, but Kazan had too much experience and too many weapons. Chief among them was big man Maciej Lampe, who simply dominated with 26 points and 13 rebounds. Two other players with Euroleague pasts also shined for the visitors: Marko Popovic with 15 points and 5 assists and Kelly McCarty, who netted 14. Matt Haryasz paced the Dutch champs with 25 points and 9 rebounds. The two-game series now switches to Kazan on Friday. The winner will meet either Czech champion CEZ Nymburk or Belgian champ Spirou Charleroi in the second of three qualifying rounds in the hunt for one of two tickets to the 2010-11 Turkish Airlines Euroleague Regular Season.

McCarty got Kazan started on the right foot with a three-pointer, but Haryasz showed the Flames have power inside by drawing a foul and sinking his team’s first points and then rejecting a shot at the other end. McCarty and Lampe kept Kazan in front, but GasTerra remained close as Haryasz shined. A Lampe triple and 4 points from Popovic put the visitors up 12-19 and the lead settled at 16-21 after 10 minutes. Haryasz had 12 points 12 minutes into the game and when Henry Bekkering hit a pair of free throws, the hosts were within 24-25. Lampe answered with 5 straight points, however tripled from Jason Dourisseau and Stephen Ross kept Groningen in the game. The Flames had no answer for Lampe though as he reached 18 first-half points. Playmaker Aron Roija kept the hosts within 1 with 2 free throws and a dish to Haryasz before Vladimir Veremeenko made it 45-48 at halftime.

McCarty and Lampe pushed the Kazan lead to 49-56 early in the third quarter only to see GasTerra keep plugging away via a Matthew Bauscher triple. However soon Hasan Rizvic got involved with three baskets in a short span of time and Unics climbed to a double-digit advantage. Another Bekkering three didn’t slow the visitors as Lampe and Popovic added baskets and the lead hit 55-70 at the end of the quarter. Bauscher and Dourisseau tried to lead GasTerra back and the deficit was trimmed from 17 to 11 on the strength of a three-point play from Haryasz and a Bauscher free throw. Haryasz stayed strong in the paint and closed the gap to 71-80, however a Lampe score gave the Kazan center more points in the head-to-head duel with Haryasz and McCarty’s layup wrapped up a 72-84 road win for Unics.

VAN DEN BERG, MARCO
GasTerra Flames
"Too bad the way we played in the third quarter. They have more experience in situations like that than we have. These two games take 80 minutes. It's halftime now and we are only 12 points behind."
PASHUTIN, EVGENY
Unics Kazan
"It was a very physical game as we expected. They made 29 points in the second half, that is not possibele for us! On Friday, the second game in Kazan, we want to finish it."
