Pierre-Antoine Gillet hit 5 second-half three-pointers as Telenet Ostend upset Khimki Moscow Region 79-90 at the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Qualifying Rounds on Wednesday in Vilnius, Lithuania. With the victory, Ostend advanced to the second stage where it will play the winner of Wednesday’s late game between CEZ Basketball Nymburk and Banvit BK Bandirma. The score was tied at 64-64 with a little over seven minutes left before Ostend nailed 5 three-pointers on its final 6 attempts and went on to pull out big win. Gillet finished with 16 points on 5-of-8 three-point shooting. Ryan Thompson led Ostend with 19 points, Quentin Serron added 10 and Jared Berggren collected 8 points plus 11 rebounds. Center Paul Davis had 32 points and 7 rebounds in defeat and Petteri Koponen netted 16 for Khimki which will compete in the 2013-14 Eurocup.
From the early going the teams traded leads, while Davis and Thompson traded buckets. With the scored tied at 10-10, Davis scored the next 8 for Khimki, and Thompson accounted for 7 in a row for Ostend. As the half went on, Koponen and Mike Green helped Davis with long jumpers, while Veselin Petrovic and Andrija Stipanovic kept pace for Ostend from close range. Mateusz Ponitka sank a triple to end the first quarter at 18-20, before Stipanovic and Jean Salumu extended it to 22-26 early in the second quarter. But neither team had more than a 4-point lead in the first half, and Davis was unstoppable in the paint. Davis scored 12 points in the second quarter alone, and with help from Mickael Gelabale, Khimki regained the lead 35-31. But Thompson went on another scoring spree, adding 7 more points - including all 3 free throws after being fouled behind the 6.75-meter line - and cut the deficit to 40-39 at halftime.
In the first two minutes of the third quarter, Gillet hit back-to-back triples, and Dusan Djordjevic sank another to make it 44-50. With both teams having more success on defense than offense, Ostend stayed in front. But Koponen hit couple of downtown shots to cut the deficit to 55-56, and his jumper put Khimki back in the lead in the final minute of the quarter, 59-58. But Berggren beat the buzzer with a put-back at the end of the quarter, and his layup at the start of the fourth helped Ostend to 59-64. After Egor Vyaltsev and Niels Marnegrave traded shots behind the arc, Berggren made a reverse layup and Gillet sank a triple from the left side for 67-72 midway through the fourth quarter. After a timeout by Khimki head coach Rimas Kurtinaits, Marko Popovic and Serron traded triples, before Stipanovic made a tough layup for 70-77 with three minutes to go. Davis made free throws and a long jumper getting Khimki closer, but Gillet hit back-to-back three-pointers, his fourth and fifth triple of the night, for 74-83 only 95 seconds before the end. Djordjevic and Thompson sealed the deal from the foul line as Ostend was not going to let big lead slip away.
