WHAT'S NEW
From top to bottom, virtually everything about the Besiktas JK Istanbul model 2013 is new. Starting with head coach Erman Kunter and going through the majority of the roster, there has been turnover. However, the new players fall into different groups. There are those that have played for Kunter before, like Randal Falker and Patrick Christopher; those that have played for Besiktas in the past, like Muratcan Guler and Cevher Ozer; and those that are veterans of both Turkish basketball and the Turkish Airlines Euroleague, like Curtis Jerrells, Gasper Vidmar and Tutku Acik. Experienced forwards Damir Markota and Vladimir Dasic complete a list of 10 newcomers meant to mount a Euroleague challenge.

THE BACKCOURT
Much of Besiktas’s success could rest on the shoulders of Jerrells, an excellent penetrator, who was a sparkplug off the bench for Fenerbahce last season. Jerrells’s skillset should go hand-in-hand with those of his shooting guards, Christopher, Guler and Serhat Cetin, who are known marksmen from behind the arc. The three are also considered to be strong defensive players. Cetin is also the most prominent of the players returning from last season. Acik will serve as Jerrells’s backup and with a different style, will also focus on creating for others. Teenagers Kartal Ozmizrak and Mehmet Yatagan have bright futures, but don’t figure to see many minutes this season.

THE FRONTCOURT
Besiktas is deep and versatile inside, starting with the multi-talented Dasic, who like fellow forwards Markota and Ozer, have excellent three-point range. With Ozer at small forward, Besiktas will be as big, strong on the boards and accurate from outside as any team in the league. Vidmar and Falker anchor the defense from the inside as shot-blocking aces. Falker is also a terror on the offensive glass, while Vidmar provides best low-post scoring option.

OUTLOOK
The Besiktas approach of a total rebuild is a bit unorthodox, but the pieces put together have the potential to do something special. Under Coach Kunter, Besiktas looks to have one of the best defensive teams, with great outside shooters and terrific rebounders. When those things all come together, especially in front of the team’s passionate fans, Besiktas will be able to match up with any team and it’s possibilities are limitless.

PLAYER TO WATCH
Gasper Vidmar. Though he is only 25 years old, Vidmar has been a Euroleague regular for the past five seasons and has long been considered a formidable defensive force inside. However he has had to make do splitting time all those years. Now he gets the chance to prove himself as a go-to guy at both ends of the floor and how well he does scoring, rebounding and as the last line of defense will have a major impact on how Besiktas’s season turns out.
