In surprising news on Wednesday, Zalgiris Kaunas announced that Ibrahim Jaaber has left the club, less than 48 hours before its next Turkish Airlines Euroleague game against Alba Berlin. Jaaber terminated his contract due to personal reasons, of which he informed the club through a letter. "Ibrahim Jaaber stated that he disagrees with the basketball rules of advertising on T-shirts," Zalgiris sports director Vitoldas Masalskis said. "It seems strange to us because he has played in Europe for a few years, got into a contract with us through his agent and both knew the clubs' terms and conditions."
"I understand that such a decision might never get me more money from basketball, but I am willing to make such a sacrifice because of my beliefs," Jaaber said. He averaged 5.9 points and 2.2 assists in 14 Euroleague games this season, his only one with Zalgiris.
Although Zalgiris announced Jaaber's departure, the club had not officially de-registered him from its Euroleague roster by early Thursday, hours before Zalgiris plays Alba Berlin at home.
