Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius terminated the contract of Coach Dirk Bauermann, the club announced Monday. Assistant coach Dainius Adomaitis will take over on an interim basis. Bauermann, 56, took over the Rytas post towards the end of last season and guided the club into the Turkish Airlines Euroleague via the qualifying rounds, however since on opening night loss, Rytas has dropped seven straight games and been eliminated from Top 16 contention. Rytas will continue its European campaign this season in the Eurocup Last 32 in January under a new coach.
Bauermann had previously coached Bamberg in a pair of Euroleague seasons, including the 2005-06 campaign, when he led the team to the Top 16 for the first time. His career Euroleague coaching record stands at 10-26. Bauermann also coached Bamberg and Bayern Munich in the Eurocup and has served as the head coach of the German and Polish national teams.
"We're thankful to Bauermann for his work. He was able to manage the crisis last year and lead us to the LKL Finals. The team won the Euroleague Qualifying Round this year, but the team's game began to deteriorate obviously," general manager Gedvydas Vainauskas said on the team website. "We were patient and believed that the situation would change. But we, the fans and sponsors can't wait anymore. Bauermann left a mark in Lietuvos Rytas history and we wish him the best of luck in the future."
