Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv got bad news in middle of its undefeated Top 16 on Monday as a specialist recommended surgery for All-Euroleague center Shawn James's back injury. James (2.08 meters, 30 years old) has missed four of Maccabi's last eight games, which were all victories and give the team the longest current win streak in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague. An MRI on Sunday revealed a ruptured disk, the club said, and a back specialist whom James saw on Monday recommended surgery. It is expected that James will miss at least a couple more Top 16 games no matter what. James was the Euroleague's fifth-rated performer last season. He led the competition in blocked shots (1.93 per game) and ranked among the best 10 players in rebounds (third, 6.5 per game) and two-point accuracy (10th, 63.7%). The Maccabi center situation is complicated by the fact that Sofoklis Schortsanitis has played only 6 minutes in the last two games due to an ankle injury. Maccabi travels to meet its historic rival Real Madrid on Thursday in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Game of the Week.
