Laboral Kutxa holds on for victory in Euroamerican Cup
Aguada - Laboral Kutxa, Euroamerican Cup

Laboral Kutxa Vitoria picked up a second win for the Turkish Airlines Euroleague teams in the Euroamerican Cup, organized by Direct TV, by holding off Aguada 77-81 on Friday night in a packed house at Palacio Peñarol in Montevideo, the Uruguayan capital. Ryan Gomes had 18 points plus 9 rebounds to lead the winners, and Davis Bertans netted 16, including a triple with 32 seconds left to fight off the hosts’ challenge and sealing the deal. Laboral’s victory comes one night after Real Madrid beat Cangrejeros de Santurce 83-103 in San Juan, Puerto Rico on Thursday. It is also the second in a series of games that six Euroleague sides are scheduled to play in nine countries on four continents. The Euroamerican Cup concludes on Sunday when Madrid completes its tour in Bogota, Colombia, against Guerreros, while Laboral faces Peñarol in Mar de Plata, Argentina.

Laboral was in a close affair throughout the night, with its first lead, 14-15, coming after a 0-9 run during which Gomes scored a triple and basket-plus-free throw, and Bertans added a three-pointer, too. However, the hosts led for much of the first half, only for Bertans to hit another three-pointer, and Orlando Johnson made back-to-back baskets in the final minute of the second quarter for 38-38 at the halftime. Fernando San Emeterio fueled a 0-9 run early in the third quarter, for Laboral’s largest lead of the night, 40-49, but Dwayne Curtis and Chris Moss led a rally by Aguada. It was 60-60 going into the fourth quarter, and Martin Osimani nailed a triple for 70-69 with 7 minutes remaining, But Thomas Heurtel led another charge by Laboral, and Orlando Johnson scored on a fastbreak for 71-78. The hosts put together another late rally, but Bertans hit his third triple of the night to seal the deal. In Laboral’s balanced attack, Heurtel amassed 15 points, 6 assists, 5 rebounds and 3 steals. San Emeterio had 14 points and 6 assists, Johnson scored 12, while Ilimane Diop collected 12 boards, 4 blocks and 3 steals. For Aguada, Curtis had 25 points plus 8 rebounds, Moss collected 19 points plus 7 rebounds, and Robert Hornsby added 12 points.
