Euroleague Basketball joins the continental basketball community in mourning the passing of Genadiy Volnov, one of the most successful players in the history of the sport. Mr. Volnov died in Moscow at age 68 on Tuesday. A life-long player for CSKA Moscow, Mr. Volnov was among the most-honored players in continental basketball. He won three European club titles with CSKA - ion 1963, 1969 and 1971 - as well as 10 Soviet Union titles. With his national team from the USSR, Mr. Volnov won 12 medals, including the 1972 Olympic gold in Munich, Germany. He also won Olympic silvers in 1960 and 1964, plus a bronze in 1968, as well as six European golds (1959,1961,1963,1965,1967,1969) and the 1967 World Championship gold. At a ceremony in Moscow last fall, Mr. Volnov was among the legends remembered during Euroleague Basketball's 50 Years celebration honoring the greats of the game across Europe.
