Injury problems continue to hurt DKV Joventut at the start of the Euroleague season. The team's top performer so far, center Pops Mensah-Bonsu, has traveled to the United States looking for a second opinion on his shoulder injury, the club announced Monday. Mensah-Bonsu has been having troubles in his right shoulder since he arrived in Badalona from the EuroBasket 2009 qualifying round, in which he helped Great Britain to advance to the main event in Poland next summer. Even when he has been playing in pain, Mesah-Bonsu amassed the highest performance index rating in the Euroleague over the first two games of the regular season. In the last one, despite a road loss to Lottomatica Roma, he earned Week 2 MVP honors after scoring 23 points and pulling 14 rebounds. Mensah-Bonsu finished that game strong, but apparently aggravated his shoulder problems in the course of it. He has not been able to practice since. Mensah-Bonsu missed his team's Spanish League game against CB Granada over the weekend. As he will be in the U.S. this week seeking the opinion of a specialist, Mensah-Bonsu will miss Joventut's home game against Fenerbahce Ulker in Group C on Thursday. Until a diagnosis is finalized, it is not known when he might be able to return to action. Joventut has had to begin the Euroleague season without its teenage star, point guard Ricky Rubio, who suffered a preseason wrist injury. Joventut carries a 1-1 record after two games in Group C.
