Real Madrid has improved its frontcourt for the final dates of the Euroleague regular season with the signing of two-time Euroleague champion Tomas Van den Spiegel. The veteran center signed a deal with the club for the remainder of the 2008-09 season. Van den Spiegel (214, 30) arrives from Azovmash Mariupol, where he averaged 12.3 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in 4 Eurocup games this season. He had helped CSKA to win its second Euroleague title in three seasons last spring. Van den Spiegel began the 2007-08 season with Polish champion Prokom and averaged 7.6 points, 5.5 points and 1 block in 18 games with both teams. He was the Week 4 MVP with one of the greatest performances in Euroleague history – 27 points on 8-for-11 shooting, 13 rebounds and 3 steals for a 50 index – in a 75-87 win at Virtus Bologna. Van den Spiegel has also played for Virtus Roma and Fortitudo Bologna it Italy, as well as for Osiris Denderleeuw, BBC Aalst and BC Oostende in his native Belgium. He has taken part in four of the last five Euroleague finals, splitting wins (CSKA 2006, 2008) and losses (Fortitudo 2004, CSKA 2007). Van den Spiegel replaces Lazaros Papadopoulos, who was been sent on loan to Fortitudo several weeks ago.
