The chance to turn around Lottomatica Roma's season as soon as this week has been given to new head coach Matteo Boniciolli, the club announced on Monday. Boniciolli, 47, signed a contract until the end of the current season. He is the first new head coach to be hired during the Euroleague season and replaces Nando Gentile, who resigned over the weekend. Boniciolli will be making his second appearance in Europe's top competition following a stint with Fortitudo Bologna between 2001 and 2002. Boniciolli will be tested immediately on the bench Wednesday, when Roma hosts Maroussi in Group C with the chance to qualify for the Top 16 before the week is over. Boniciolli arrives from Virtus Bologna, where last season he won the FIBA EuroChallenge title, becoming the first coach at the club besides Ettore Messina to lift a European trophy. He previously coached at Air Avellino, where he won the 2008 Italian Cup and was named the country's coach of the year. Over the last decade, he had also coached Italian clubs Teramo Basket, Pallacanestro Messina and Udine, while also spending a one-year stint at Oostende of Belgium.
