Jan 18, 2010 by Euroleague.net Print
Jordi Bertomeu, Euroleague CEOIt is an honour to welcome you, one more season, to the Euroleague Basketball Top 16 Draw, and I take the opportunity to wish everyone a very successful 2010. Thank you for coming to this event, and thanks to our partner Mediapro, which once again hosts a Euroleague Basketball draw. And thanks to the clubs, players, coaches, referees, and everybody involved in this excellent Regular Season.

A season in which despite the difficulties that the world of sport is going through due to the worldwide financial situation: Euroleague maintains its strong TV coverage at a worldwide level, in the five continents, in 160 countries. Euroleague and its teams continue to have the support of the fans each week in its arenas. Euroleague and its teams renew its sponsorship contracts and incorporates new partners.

For this reason, I would like to specially thank the sponsors that commit themselves to the sport and announce the renewal of our agreement with Sportingbet for the next few years. I would like to particularly thank our new partners that are joining the Euroleague Basketball family: a very prestigious company in the sports equipment industry, which has been present at the great sports events and from now on MONDO will be at those of the Euroleague. I would like to ask Santiago Palomera, CEO Mondo Iberica to join me on stage..

Our clubs have competed strongly to qualify for the Top 16, but they have also had time to demonstrate their commitment with the community. I thank all of them for their great support to the campaign of the Euroleague and Special Olympics , and also for all the solidarity activities that they have conducted at Christmas. And now Euroleague and its clubs would like to be supportive with those who have lost everything in Haiti by donating a sum of money obtained from the attendance on the first game of the Top 16.

You know that this is the 10th Euroleague Basketball season, and we are going to recall those players that have left their mark in our competition. Our fans and our experts will nominate the 10 key players of the decade, the ones that deserve a public recognition for having given us many moments of great basketball. We recognise the past, but we continue to look towards the future. This year we have changed the structure of the League. A structure that definitively allows the best teams, all the champions, to participate.

But this is not enough. We want to keep improving the competition. In the coming months we are going to propose to the clubs: a debate on the competition system and a debate on the calendar.

As you know, Paris will Host the Euroleague Final Four from May 7th to 9th. France and the French Federation contribute much to basketball, and the arena, le Palais Omnisports Bercy, has great basketball tradition. In Paris, we will also count on our partner AEG, who already contributed greatly to the success in Berlin in 2009. Euroleague and its clubs, the French Basketball Federation and AEG have taken a commitment. To make all our fans enjoy a great basketball weekend. I would like to thank the President of the French Basketball Federation, Mr. Yvan Mainini, for his support to the Final Four and would kindly ask him to address us with some words.

Thanks and best of luck with the draw.
