Top 16
A very balanced Top 16 group features two solid Final Four contender - Olympiacos and Caja Laboral - a newcomer than is set to keep beating the expectations - BC Khimki Moscow Region - and a regular Euroleague team that is ready to upset some teams from now on to increase its qualifying chances - Cibona. Olympiacos is the top scoring team this far (84.4 ppg.) and also leads the Euroleague in assists (19.9 apg.). Laboral is second in least turnovers (114) and three-point percentage (41.7%). Cibona made it to the Top 16 despite being last in scoring (63.7 ppg.), assists (9.6 apg.) and three-point accuracy (25%) and Khimki was first in total rebounds (36.3 rpg.). Olympiacos playmaker Scoonie Penn has the chance to play against his former team, Cibona, where he became a Euroleague superstar. Cibona head coach Velimir Perasovic goes against his former team, Laboral, in which he took to the 2007 Final Four as a coach and won the 1996 Saporta Cup title as a player. Perasovic will go against Laboral boss Dusko Ivanovic. As players, Perasovic and Ivanovic led Jugoplastika to win European Cup titles in 1989 and 1990. In fact, Perasovic, Ivanovic and Olympiacos coach Panagiotis Giannakis played at the 1989 Final Four.
Top 16, Group H player analysis: CARLOS CABEZAS, BC KHIMKI
Carlos Cabezas - BC Khimki
He arrived with the mission to help show a Euroleague newcomer the way to success, and already one goal has been met: Carlos Cabezas and Khimki Moscow Region are in the Top 16. Cabezas has fullfilled his role so far, too, scoring in bunches - often in the clutch - while directing the offense and battling on defense. Top 16 is the perfect stage on which Cabezas can show how his experience as world and European national champ translate into big-game know-how. "We have the ambition to compete, and now we just have to go game to game," Cabezas said. "We have to hit the ground running and battle all the time. We will try to win all our home games and see if we can grab one on the road. It might be enough." READ MORE
