Unicaja made guard Gerald Fitch the first addition of the Chus Mateo era by signing the player for the remainder of the season. Fitch (191, 28) arrives from Aliaga Petkim, where he averaged 18.8 points in six Turkish League games this season. He has experience in the Spanish League too and was the ACB’s No. 2 scorer last season with Fuenlabrada when he posted 17.9 points per game. Mateo was an assistant coach on that team. Fitch has some past Euroleague experience with Cibona Zagreb from the 2004-05 season. He appeared in seven games and averaged 14 points. Fitch made a name for himself as a star high school and college basketball player in his native United States. He was the player of the year in the state of Georgia as a high school senior and then starred for four seasons at the University of Kentucky, where he was named MVP of the South Eastern Conference Tournament as a senior in 2004. As a professional, he has played for Miami in the NBA and Austin in the NBDL in America as well as for Galatasaray, Kepez Bld and Aliaga Petkim in Turkey, Cantu in Italy, Khimik in Ukraine, Cibona in Croatia and Fuenlabrada in Spain. Fitch will not be available to play in the Euroleague for Unicaja until the registration window opens before the February 17 game at Lietuvos Rytas.
