Playoff Series breakdown: Olympiacos vs. Montepaschi Siena

Mar 16, 2011 by Euroleague.net Print
Olympiacos
Two of the Euroleague’s strongest teams over the past decade will lock horns for a single Final Four spot when Greek powerhouse Olympiacos goes against perennial Italian League champion Montepaschi Siena in their best-of-five Quarterfinal Playoffs series. The Reds from Piraeus are looking to reach the Final Four for the third season in a row, while Montepaschi aims for its fourth appearance since 2003. Despite their rich traditions, these teams have only played twice before, with Siena winning both games in the 2007-08 Euroleague Regular Season. These teams survived the Top 16 despite losing key players to injuries: the Reds were without former All-Euroleague big man Ioannis Bourousis for two games, while Montepaschi missed All-Euroleague point guard Bo McCalebb for all six. McCalebb nearly led Partizan past Olympiacos in the semifinals of last season’s Final Four before losing in overtime. Both players are expected to suit up in the Playoffs. The series features a clash of styles as Olympiacos ranked third in the Euroleague in scoring (79.1 ppg.), while Montepaschi allowed the second fewest points in the competition (67.8 ppg.). The two teams have several former Final Four participants – including the head coaches – and multiple past Euroleague champs on the roster, so expect to see both ready for the level of intensity that the Quarterfinal Playoffs brings with it.
Montepaschi Siena
Yotam Halperin - Olympiacos
Olympiacos guard Yotam Halperin knows a thing or two about winning. Though first entering the prime of his career at age 27, Halperin is already a two-time Euroleague champion and has been to three straight Euroleague Basketball Final Fours and six in his career. An All-Euroleague Second Team selection in 2008 after leading Maccabi Tel Aviv to the Euroleague final, he now plays the role of an important reserve who brings instant offense and valuable experience off the bench in Olympiacos's star-studded backcourt. His 12-point, 5-assist effort in the Reds' Top 16 finale against Zalgiris showed that Halperin is ready to offer important contributions at any time.

Marco Carraretto - Montepaschi Siena
Seasoned veteran Marco Carraretto is one of Montepaschi Siena’s most important players, even though the numbers might not tell the whole story. A savvy swingman with experience, defensive toughness and great three-point shooting ability, Carraretto has been providing head coach Simone Pianigiani with a reliable option off the bench for five years. He is one of five Montepaschi players that also played on the 2007-08 squad, which marked the last time the club reached the Euroleague Final Four. Now at age 33, Carraretto enters the Quarterfinal Playoffs showdown against Olympiacos Piraeus knowing that this could be one of his last chances to reach the Final Four, but also confident and worry-free knowing that the pressure is on the opponents.
