Union Olimpija reunites with Varda

Ratko Varda - Asseco Prokom_30637Union Olimpija signed Ratko Varda to man the pivot this season, bringing the center back to Ljubljana for the first time since the 2002-03 season. Varda (2.13 meters, 32 years old) helped Olimpija win the 2003 Slovenian Cup. He comes off his finest Euroleague season from a personal standpoint with Asseco Prokom in which he averaged 13.3 points and 4.5 rebounds over 10 games. Varda was the Sportingbet Regular Season Week 8 MVP after recording a career-best 25 points on 10-of-12 two-point shooting in addition to 8 rebounds, 2 steals and a block against Zalgiris. He made his professional debut with Partizan Belgrade in 1998 and in 2001 he crossed the pond to join Detroit of the NBA. He was traded to Washington and came back to Europe for the 2002-03 season with Olimpija, where he won the Slovenian Cup. After that he played in Greece (Apollon Patras), Turkey (Besiktas), Ukraine (BC Kyiv), Spain (Real Madrid and ViveMenorca), Russia (BC Khimki Moscow Region), Lithuania (Zalgiris) and Poland (Prokom). In the 2006-07 season with Madrid, Varda won the Spanish League title and the ULEB Cup and he has helped Prokom win back-to-back Polish League championships the past two years.
