FIBA Americas: Day 3 – Three claim first victories

Esteban Batista - Uruguay (photo FIBA Americas)Puerto Rico became the first team to three victories while a trio of teams stayed alive with their first wins on Day 3 of the FIBA Americas 2011 tournament in Argentina. Puerto Rico's guards did the damage in a 64-74 victory over Uruguay. Carlos Arroyo and Jose Barea had 19 and 14 points, respectively, in the victory, while former Euroleague center Daniel Santiago had 11 rebounds, 8 points. Uruguay's second loss came despite a big night by Esteban Batista of Anadolu Efes Istanbul, who registered a double-double of 16 pointss, 12 rebounds. Canada hung on for its first win, 73-72 over the Dominican Republic, with the help of 3 points and 2 assists from Jermaine Anderson of KK Buducnost. Panama outlasted Paraguay 86-89 and Venezuela blasted Cuba 69-106, both for their first wins, as well.
