FIBA Americas: Day 6 – Favorites stay strong

Marcelo Huertas - BrazilAll four favorites made good on their promise as the quarterfinal round of FIBA Americas 2011 got started on Monday in Mar de Plata, Argentina. Brazil stepped strong into the second round of the tournament with a resounding 93-66 win over Uruguay. Marcelinho Huertas of FC Barcelona Regal made all of his shots for 9 points while leading Brazil with 6 assists and 4 steals in just 20 minutes of play. Vitor Alves led the winners with 21 points and former All-Euroleague center Tiago Splitter had 9 points, 8 rebounds. Esteban Batista of Anadolu Efes Pilsen had 9 points, 5 rebounds for Uruguay. Host nation Argentina kept soaring with a 53-79 decision against Canada. Two more former All-Euroleague players, Luis Scola and Manu Ginobili, led the way with 22 and 16 points, respectively, while Pablo Prigioni of Caja Laboral dished 5 assists. Dominican Republic kept rolling with a 92-68 win over Panama, while Puerto Rico fought off Venezuela 82-94.
