Did you know? Regular Season Round 1

Sep 01, 2018 by Euroleague.net Print

You know that the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague is the only major round-robin team competition in Europe.

You know, therefore, that fans anywhere can see every major club and superstar player go against their own teams.

And you know what that adds up to – season-long drama that only the EuroLeague can deliver!

BUT…. did you know the following about the games of Round 1?

One Team RS01

Buducnost VOLI Podgorica vs. AX Armani Exchange Olimpia Milan

The season's very first game tips off in the Montenegrin capital of Podgorica.

The last time Buducnost hosted a EuroLeague game was on February 6, 2003. That's 15 years, 8 months and 5 days between home games!

CSKA Moscow vs. FC Barcelona Lassa

Barcelona has not won against CSKA in Moscow for more than six years.

Only Ante Tomic remains for Barcelona and Andrey Vorontsevich from CSKA from that game on December 13, 2012. The leading scorer was recently-retired Juan Carlos Navarro, with 21 points.

Panathinaikos OPAP Athens vs. Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv

New Panathinaikos players Keith Langford and DeShaun Thomas both played for Maccabi before.

When Langford did so in 2010-11, he scored 10.8 points on average, 4.7 points fewer than in any of his other six EuroLeague seasons.

Real Madrid vs. Darussafaka Istanbul

Darussafaka beat Madrid the last time they played in the Spanish capital.

That was in Game 2 of their 2017 playoffs series, which Madrid won 3-1. This time they will be playing as the defending EuroLeague and 7DAYS EuroCup champions.

Khimki Moscow Region vs. Olympiacos Piraeus

Khimki head coach Georgios Bartzokas goes against his former team.

Bartzokas led Olympiacos to the EuroLeague title in 2013. He is the only active EuroLeague head coach to put three different clubs in the playoffs.

Zalgiris Kaunas vs. KIROLBET Baskonia Vitoria Gasteiz

These two teams have swept each other in the last four seasons they played.

Baskonia was 2-0 vs. Zalgiris last season and in the 2015-16 Top 16. Zalgiris was 2-0 vs. Baskonia in the 2016-17 season and back in the 2012-13 regular season.

Fenerbahce Istanbul vs. Herbalife Gran Canaria

This game features the oldest rookie in EuroLeague history.

Gran Canaria's Albert Oliver turned 40 years old on June 4 of this year. The minute he steps on a EuroLeague court, his will become the oldest debutante in Europe's top competition ever.

FC Bayern Munich vs. Anadolu Efes Istanbul

Bayern and Efes will meet for the first time ever.

What's more, the only player who has coincided playing on both teams is Vasilije Micic of Efes, who spent parts of two seasons between 20014 and 2016 with Bayern.
