CSKA City Streetball tourney brings fans, players together

CSKA Moscow hit the streets over the weekend to share its love of basketball with fans across the Russian capital. The CSKA City Streetball event held Thursday through Sunday brought together 135 teams, both boys and girls, in a 3x3 format at the famous Rizhka outdoor courts.

Current and former CSKA players and coaches attended the tournament to meet the participants, offer tips, pose for photos and sign autographs. It was a great opportunity for the core CSKA players from recent seasons to get out and get reacquainted with each other and their supporters. The tournament also gave CSKA newcomers, like Joel Bolomboy, Daniel Hackett and Alec Peters, a chance to feel the passion Muscovites have for the game.

"It's a great time of the year," guard Cory Higgins, who enters his fourth season with the club, said. "Everybody is getting back together. It's like a family mini-reunion."

Higgins was impressed by how the CSKA City games generated so much excitement among the local residents. "I think it's a great medium because it's hard for everybody to get on a five-on-five team, so you have these 3x3 tournaments," he said. "The love of the game is contagious. Everybody wants to play."

CSKA legends of yesteryear Alzhan Zharmukhamedov and Sergey Taraknov visited on the final day of the tournament and were able to congratulate the winners of the school events.

CSKA City was more than just a 3x3 tournament for school children. There was also a One Team-sponsored tourney for players who are hard of hearing and the CSKA Dance Team ran activities on Saturday and Sunday for girls interested in auditioning for that team.
