Zalgiris names Plaza as newest head coach
Joan Plaza - Cajasol Sevilla - Finals Treviso 2011Zalgiris Kaunas named Joan Plaza as its new head coach. Plaza, age 48, arrives from Banca Civica Sevilla, which he has coached for the past three seasons. Plaza led the team to its first Spanish League playoffs appearance in 10 years in the 2009-10 season. He did even better in 2010-11 by taking the then-called Cajasol Sevilla all the way to the Eurocup title game before losing against Unics Kazan. Plaza took Banca Civica back to the Spanish League playoffs again last season in addition to reaching the Spanish King's Cup semifinals. Plaza started his careers in youth teams before being promoted to DKV Joventut assistant coach. He moved to Real Madrid to work for bench master Bozidar Maljkovic and became Los Blancos's head coach before the start of the 2006-07 season. He led Real Madrid to the Spanish League and the ULEB Cup titles in 2007 and reached the Euroleague playoffs in 2008-09. Plaza faces a new challenge by now returning to the Turkish Airlines Euroleague for the first time in three years.
