Zalgiris Kaunas’ 60-72 road victory over Buducnost VOLI Podgorica continues the unusual start to the Lithuanian team’s Turkish Airlines EuroLeague season - namely going winless at home and undefeated on the road.
Zalgiris’ 3-3 record is split right down the middle: 0-3 at Zalgirio Arena and 3-0 away from home. In fact Sarunas Jasikevicius’ team has yet to lose on the road this season at all, with a perfect 4-0 away record in the domestic LKL league.
Being still so early in the season, it’s hard to say anything more than it’s just an oddity, though Zalgiris has lost to KIROLBET Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz, Fenerbahce Istanbul and Real Madrid at home thus far. But Zalgiris’ record is not necessarily indicative of a trend for Jasikevicius’ teams over his previous two years at the helm in Kaunas. Zalgiris went 11-4 at home in the Regular Season last year with a 7-8 mark away from home before going 1-1 on the road and 2-0 at Zalgirio Arena in the Playoffs against Olympiacos Piraeus en route to the Final Four.
In the 2016-17 season, Zalgiris put together a 6-9 record at home while going 8-7 on the road for a 14-16 mark that was two games from reaching the Playoffs.
Zalgiris’ next game will be at home against FC Barcelona Lassa - when Saras and co. hope to finally celebrate a first EuroLeague home victory this season, and end the unusual start to the campaign.
