ASVEL captures French championship

LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne won the French championship for the 19th time on Tuesday when it defeated AS Monaco 66-55 to in Game 5 of their best-of-five series. ASVEL steamrolled Monaco 24-6 in the third quarter to erase a double-digit deficit and take control of the game for good. Miro Bilan and A.J. Slaughter scored 11 points apiece to pace the winners, while Charles Kahudi added 9 points and 10 rebounds. ASVEL guard DeMarcus Nelson was named MVP of the finals after averaging 7.8 points and 3.0 assists in the series. Lazeric Jones and Dee Bost netted 13 points each for Monaco.

Bilan and Theo Maledon helped ASVEL to a promising 15-8 start, but threes by Bost and Jarrod Jones helped Monaco rally to 19-17 after 10 minutes. Bost tied it for Monaco to start the second quarter and Amara Sy gave the visitors the lead. Lazeric Jones scored 5 points in a 0-8 Monaco run to take a 9-point lead before Bilan split free throws to bring the hosts within 27-35 at the break. ASVEL started the second half on fire; Slaughter hit a pair of threes and Adreian Payne, Kahudi and Mantas Kalnietis each knocked down a triple in a 24-3 charge to open the third quarter. Monaco was held to just 6 points in the entire quarter as ASVEL surged ahead 51-41. Elmedin Kikanovic scored twice to bring Monaco within 53-47, however, David Lighty scored the 5 straight points to restore a double-digit ASVEL lead with 2 minutes remaining and the hosts held on the rest of the way.
