Coach Jaume Ponsarnau will lead 7DAYS EuroCup champion Valencia Basket in its Turkish Airlines EuroLeague return after the sides agreed to terms on a contract for the 2019-20 season. Ponsarnau, 48, joined Valencia in 2016 and spent two years as an assistant coach, first under Pedro Martinez and then under Txus Vidorreta. He was promoted to head coach last summer and led Valencia to its fourth EuroCup title in April. As Martinez's assistant coach, Ponsarnau helped Valencia win the Spanish League title and reach the EuroCup Finals in 2017. He started his career with Club Natacio Tarrega and also coached Basquet Manresa and Gipuzkoa Basket Club. As an assistant coach, Ponsarnau also worked with the Spanish national team and helped it nab a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Ponsarnau is now set to make his EuroLeague head coaching debut next season.
"I am very happy about this deal and excited to stay with this club, with the people I have been working with for three years," Ponsarnau said after the agreement. "Going back to the EuroLeague is a very demanding project, but also a very nice one. The tournament is harder than ever and we have a huge challenge, which is to be as competitive as possible."
