Barcelona, Heurtel pen multiyear extension

FC Barcelona and playmaker Thomas Heurtel penned a two-plus-one contract extension that will keep the competition's all-time assists-per-game leader doing his magic in the Catalan capital. Heurtel (1.89 meters, 30 years old) just completed his second season with the club, and re-signed his contract for two more years, with an option to extend it until the end of the 2021-22 campaign. He averaged 10.4 points on 45.0% three-point shooting plus 4.8 assists in 35 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague games last season in helping Barcelona reach a fifth-and-deciding game in the playoffs for a spot in the Final Four. Heurtel led Barcelona to victory in the Spanish Copa del Rey in each of the past two seasons while becoming the first player to ever win MVP honors in consecutive years that competition's championship game. In addition to his EuroLeague record 5.6 assists per game for his career, Heurtel ranks third in EuroLeague history with 1,173 career assists.

This coming season will be Huertel's ninth in Europe's premier competition. He began his career with Pau-Orthez in his native France and also played for Strasbourg before heading abroad for the first time in 2010 to suit up for Alicante in Spain. Heurtel made his EuroLeague debut a season later with Caja Laboral – now known as KIROLBET Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz, where he spent three-and-a-half seasons before moving to Anadolu Efes Istanbul for two-and-a-half years. A long-time member of the French national team, Heurtel was a member of the gold-medal winning squad at EuroBasket 2013 and the bronze-medal side at the 2014 Basketball World Cup.
