Zvezda's Kuzmic thankful in comeback from accident

Ognjen Kuzmic, the former Turkish Airlines EuroLeague champion who suffered severe injuries in a recent car accident, is on the mend and grateful to everyone who supported him.

His club, Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade, issued a statement on Wednesday in which the player thanked everyone around him and the club's fans for their support. Kuzmic's accident occurred while he driving between Banja Luka and Prijedor in Bosnia and Herzegovina on Sunday, July 14. He was airlifted to a hospital in Belgrade and underwent surgery to fix severe facial and upper jaw injuries and eliminate the problems related to his breathing. Kuzmic was placed in an induced coma for several days, but since being awakened last Thursday, has gotten better and better. He eventually left the hospital emergency room to the intensive care unit as his prognosis improved.

"It's up to me now to recover completely by listening to doctors. I feel good and ready to move on!"

In its latest update on Wednesday, Zvezda said that Kuzmic was taking visitors, including club president Nebojsa Covic, and expressed his thanks for all the support he has received from the Serbian and European basketball communities.

"I wanted this opportunity to thank everyone who was concerned about me after everything I experienced and lived through," Kuzmic said, starting with the club, the doctors, his current and former teammates, and his national team.

"Of course, a lot of thanks to Zvezda fans, who took care of me, sent me support through my closest ones, through the club and finally with that banner on the match that really hit me in heart," Kuzmic added. "Thank you all. I apologize if I left someone out; so much happened in just 10 days. It's up to me now to recover completely by listening to doctors. I feel good and ready to move on!"
