ALBA, Coach Aito agree to new deal

The reigning EuroCup Coach of the Year, Aito Garcia Reneses, will remain on the ALBA Berlin sidelines for another season after the sides penned a new contract. Garcia Reneses, 72, has spent the past two seasons in the German capital. Last season, he guided ALBA to the 7DAYS EuroCup Finals and the German League finals, which earned the club a spot in the 2019-20 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague. In doing so, Garcia Reneses will coach in Europe's premier competition for the first time since the 20-11 campaign.

The man widely known as Aito has one of the most impressive coaching resumes in the sport. He is a two-time EuroCup Coach of the Year and has led clubs to European trophies in four different competitions. He won the Saporta Cup in 1986 and the Korac Cup in 1987 and 1999 with FC Barcelona as well as the FIBA EuroCup in 2007 and the EuroCup in 2008 with DKV Joventut Badalona. Aito also guided the Spanish national team to a close second place and the silver medal at the 2008 Olympic Games. He has won a total of nine Spanish League championships and five Spanish Copa del Reys.

"The past two years in Berlin have exceeded my expectations", coach Aito said. "The experience with players, coaches, staff and fans was great and the good, productive atmosphere between all involved was an important factor in the successful development during this time. Extremely strong opponents are waiting for us in the EuroLeague next season. I am therefore very happy that we have held almost the entire team together. It is very difficult for most basketball clubs in Europe to keep their players strong after strong performances. This continuity is very important to us. "

He made his coaching debut in 1974 with Circulo Catolico of Badalona, Spain, and has since coached Joventut, Barcelona, Unicaja Malaga, Cajasol Seville and Herbalife Gran Canaria. His tenure at Barcelona lasted 17 years, including a period as the team's general manager. With Barcelona, Aito reached six EuroLeague Final Fours and the EuroLeague championship game four times – in 1989, 1990, 1996 and 1997. ALBA was his first team outside of Spain.
