Signature Moves: Facu Campazzo, Real Madrid

He came to the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague as an up-and-coming playmaker with a lot of character and an extremely high basketball IQ. Facu Campazzo did not see much playing time in his first season with Real Madrid, in which he lifted the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague title, but returned after a two-year loan to UCAM Murcia ready to play a bigger role for Los Blancos. Injuries and departures allowed Campazzo to see more playing time and he made the most out of it. His self-confidence has never been in question and five years later, Campazzo is one of the best point guards in the world. His assists average went up from 4.5 in the 2017-18 EuroLeague to 5.2 last season and he is averaging 7.1 assists in the current campaign.

Being surrounded by great players, of course, helps Campazzo get more assists, just as does the fact that Real has kept the same core of players year after year. Campazzo has mastered his signature move over the years, the bounce pass. He used it in a variety of ways to surprise his defenders and please the Real faithful, whether behind going the back, between the legs, or no look. Campazzo is also able to drive and dish, often using the bounce pass to find Edy Tavares. Everyone expects Campazzo to feed the tallest man in the team up high, but he often delivers a perfect-pitch bounce assist for an easy two. All Real the big men have great hands, but his connection with Tavares and Gabriel Deck is special. Campazzo and Deck were playing together for years on the Argentinean national team and get the job done without even seeing each other.

The numbers back these connections but surprisingly, Campazzo has more assists this season to Anthony Randolph (42) than to any other teammate, even though the Real big man missed nine games this season due to injury. Tavares (38) and Deck (31) are right behind him. The fact that Campazzo has also become a better scorer helps him create for others, too. Campazzo averaged 2.8 points per game in this EuroLeague debut season, but his scoring numbers went up to 7.9 points in the 2017-18 campaign, 8.7 in 2018-19 and 9.9 this season. Campazzo won his second EuroLeague title in 2018 and set a Final Four record for most assists (15) in the 2019 third-place game against Fenerbahce Istanbul. Expect 'El Mago' to keep improving and of course, keep delivering assists from all angles.
