In his maiden Turkish Airlines EuroLeague season, Luke Sikma of ALBA Berlin is putting up unprecedented numbers. He brings the best skills of a point guard and a big man to the floor to rank among the league leaders in rebounds (sixth, 6.5 rpg.) and performance index rating (10th, 16.6) while averaging more assists (4.5 apg.) than any big man in competition history. Sikma's combination of inside scoring, three-point shooting (43.3%) and passing all feed into one another to make him an elite offensive weapon. However, while many of his abilities can be found in other EuroLeague stars, there is no other player who can dish it from both the low- and high-post quite like Sikma.
When Sikma is on the court, he challenges all five defenders to be at their best. If a bigger defender gives him too much space on the perimeter, Sikma can punish him with a three-pointer. Guard him with a quicker guy and Sikma will use his strength in the paint. Bring in a help defender? Sikma will spot the open man. Let him operate for too long on the high post and you risk him zipping a pass to a cutter. On top of it all, Sikma is a master of all the "trick" passes so that he can always get the ball to an open player at the basket, whether that means dishing it behind his back, over his head or through his or a defender's legs.
Sikma's do-it-all game has seen him flirt with triple-doubles on multiple occasions. He was the star of his team's road win over Panathinaikos OPAP Athens with 14 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists in Round 8. In a Round 26 loss against top-ranked Anadolu Efes, Sikma went wild for 9 points, 7 rebounds and 8 assists. He also has five point-rebound double-doubles in the current campaign.
The 30-year-old, who is the son of Basketball Hall of Famer Jack Sikma, is in his third season with ALBA and is signed through 2023. He began his professional career with La Palma in Spain and later played with Burgos and Tenerife before joining Valencia Basket in 2015. Sikma helped Valencia reach the 7DAYS EuroCup Finals in 2017, the same year in which they won the Spanish League championship. Last season he was the EuroCup MVP and led ALBA to the EuroCup Finals.
