Zenit St Petersburg strengthened its backcourt by signing guard Denis Zakharov to a two-year contract, the club announced Monday. Zakharov (1.93 meters, 26 years old) arrives from fellow Russian club Enisey Krasnoyarsk where he spent the past three seasons. He averaged 11.8 points and 2.1 steals per game last season in the VTB United League. He particularly impressed against Zenit with 17 and 19 points, respectively, in their two meetings last season. Zakharov previously played for Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar, Spartak Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod and Dynamo Moscow. He has also played for the Russian national team.
"Moving to Zenit is a big step forward in my career," Zakharov said. "It's a big level of competition both in the VTB League and the EuroLeague and the club has big goals in both of them, so it's good for me. I made the right choice because it's flattering to every player to know that a EuroLeague club wants to have him. I was amazed by Zenit fans when I saw them at the games, I suppose they root even louder during EuroLeague games. I hope we'll see this level of support throughout the whole season no matter what the result is, and I'll try to do my best on the court."
