Valencia Basket added explosiveness and experience to its roster with the signing of power forward Derrick Williams on a one-year contract, the club announced Wednesday. One of the most acrobatic players in the competition and an expert at alley-oop finishes, Williams (2.03 meters, 29 years old) arrives from Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul, where he averaged 11.3 points and 3.9 rebounds over 28 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague games last season. He also helped Fenerbahce win the Turkish Cup. Williams made his EuroLeague debut with FC Bayern Munich in the 2018-19 campaign in which he posted 13.4 points and 4.2 rebounds in 29 games. He led Bayern to the German League title in 2019, too.
The addition of Williams gives Valencia a deadly big man trio for next season alongside the returning Bojan Dubljevic and Louis Labeyrie. Williams, the second overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft, played parts of seven seasons in the NBA for Minnesota, Sacramento, New York, Miami, Cleveland and the Los Angeles Lakers. He averaged 8.9 points and 4.0 rebounds in 428 NBA regular-season career games. Before making his EuroLeague debut with Bayern, Williams also spent time with Tianjin Gold Lions in China.
