A legend of the European benches will stay put one more season as on Friday ALBA Berlin made official a one-year contract extension with Aito Garcia Reneses. However, Garcia Reneses, 73, won't be alone in his position as the club has also promoted former assistant coach Israel Gonzalez to the associate head coach position with a new two-year deal.
"I feel very comfortable at ALBA and identify with the program and the people involved." Garcia Reneses said. "I'm looking forward to working with the players every day to get better and get the most out of them."
Aito is a coaching legend that started his career in 1973 with Cotonificio Badalona in Spain. Since then, he has coached teams like FC Barcelona, Joventut Badalona, Unicaja Malaga, Seville and Herbalife Gran Canaria before joining ALBA. As a head coach for the Spanish national team, Aito won an olympic silver in Beijing 2008. He also has a total five European titles, nine Spanish League titles, five Spanish Cup titles and he also took ALBA to a double crown in 2019-20 with the German Cup and League titles.
ALBA is expected to return to work in preparations for the 2020-21 season next week, as all players keep returning to Berlin and passing the COVID-19 tests.
