FabFive tips, Round 14: Study the matchups

The two-round weeks are always a challenge in the EuroLeague FabFive Challenge. The second round of games is always the easier one to choose, as minutes played from the first games can show who may be likely to get more chances in the second set. Figuring out how each coach treats his squad in the Tuesday and Wednesday games can be tricky.

Among the many reasons to choose a player for FabFive can be the matchups. That could mean finding a player who seems destined for a mismatch, playing a porous defense or meeting his former team. That sizes up a few of the players suggested below. In Range 1 and sometimes Round 2, the exciting picks can come from players returning to form from injuries, which can be found here, too.

Last but not least, there is no substitute for the hot hand. When a player seems to be unstoppable, ride the wave.

With all that in mind, here are some FabFive suggestions for Round 14:

Range 1 (0 to 3.99) – Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv is easing Omri Casspi back into action. He's played less than 10 minutes in each of his first two games and was held out of the team's Israeli Cup game on Sunday so that he would be fresh for LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne. A player the caliber of Casspi, who averaged 12.0 points per game last season, is a steal in Range 1, even if he's not completely back to his pre-injury form yet.

Range 2 (4 to 7.99) – After scoring 12 points against his former club, Real Madrid, last week, Zenit St Petersburg sharpshooter KC Rivers meets another ex, FC Bayern Munich, this week. Is there a better time for him to drop in a few more threes?

Range 3 (8 to 11.99) – With Langston Hall sidelined, Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade has handed Corey Walden even more playing time. His team's next game will likely be an uptempo contest against ALBA Berlin and that should result in many more scoring opportunities.

Range 4 (12 to 14.99) – ASVEL guard Norris Cole not only leads his team in scoring and has played a key role in his team's wins, but on Wednesday he'll face the team he made his EuroLeague debut with. There's no better time than now to bet on Cole.

Range 5 (15.0 or higher) – There is no player in the league hotter than CSKA Moscow’s Mike James right now and he should be gunning for another explosive night when he takes on Anadolu Efes Istanbul and its superstar Shane Larkin. There will be fireworks in the Russian capital and that makes both of these players worthy choices.
