ALBA holds off Bayern in Game 1 of German finals
Maodo Lo scored 8 points over the final minute and a half to lead ALBA Berlin to an 89-86 victory over FC Bayern Munich in Game 1 of the German playoff finals on Wednesday. ALBA led for nearly all of the first 38 minutes before Bayern rallied to set up a thrilling finish. Marcus Eriksson shot 6 for 8 from behind the arc to lead ALBA with 23 points, Simone Fontecchio added 18 points and Ben Lammers and Lo scored 11 each. James Gist paced Bayern with 19 points, D.J. Seeley scored 14, Wade Baldwin IV 13, Vladimir Lucic 12 and Jalen Reynolds 11. After Baldwin opened the scoring with a triple for Bayern, ALBA scored the next 8 points to take control. Bayern tied it briefly at 38-38 late in the second quarter on a three by Nihad Djedovic, but Niels Giffey scored the next 5 points and ALBA led 45-40 at the break. Luke Sikma stretched the lead to double figures, 68-57, late in the third quarter. Bayern rallied in the fourth and used a 0-10 run to grab an 80-82 lead through Seeley with 1:31 remaining. Lo tied the score on the next possession before hitting a go-ahead three in the final minute and another with 14 seconds left to secure the victory.
Italy: Virtus takes 3-0 lead in finals
Virtus Segafredo Bologna took a 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven Italian League finals with a 76-58 victory over AX Armani Exchange Milan. After the visitors took a lead late in the third quarter, Virtus dominated the fourth 24-6. Kyle Weems starred with 23 points and 10 rebounds for the winners, Milos Teodosic added 12 points and 6 assists and Alessandro Pajola scored 10. Luigi Datome and Shavon Shields scored 14 points apiece and Kevin Punter had 11 for Milan. There was little to separate the teams in the first quarter, which finished with the hosts ahead 17-16. Virtus scored 11 straight points to open the second quarter, but Milan rallied behind Punter and briefly took the lead on a Jeff Brooks three, 30-31. Weems answered quickly and Virtus led 37-34 at halftime. Teodosic and Weems hit threes in an 8-1 start to the second half that restored a double-digit lead for the home side. Datome took charge with 10 points in a 0-13 Milan run for a 49-50 lead and the third quarter finished with the teams tied 52-52. Virtus turned up the heat on defense and finished the game on a 16-2 tear to take the game and total control of the series.
Tenerife tops Barcelona to tie Spanish semis
Lenovo Tenerife defeated FC Barcelona 80-68 to even their best-of-three Spanish League semifinals series at 1-1. Marcelinho Huertas led Tenerife with 26 points and 11 assists against his former team, while Georgi Shermadini posted 21 points on 8-of-10 shooting plus 10 rebounds and Tyler Cavanaugh added 10 points. Pau Gasol paced Barcelona with 15 points and 7 rebounds, Brandon Davies and Cory Higgins scored 12 points apiece and Nikola Mirotic had 10 points and 9 boards in defeat. After training by double digits early in the third quarter, Barcelona rallied to within 57-55 and seemed to have momentum. However, Tenerife used a 12-0 run that bridged the third and fourth quarters, while holding Barcelona scoreless for more than 5 minutes, to take a 69-55 advantage from which the visitors never recovered.
