Panathinaikos Superfoods Athens big man Ian Vougioukas got ready for the playoffs by giving his backing to the club’s work with One Team, Euroleague Basketball’s continent-wide social responsibility program.
The Greek giant is carrying out its ‘Basketball is Everywhere’ project, in coordination with Special Olympics Hellas, for the fourth consecutive season, and Vougioukas is actively supporting those activities in his role as the club’s official One Team Ambassador.
Vougioukas headed down to the indoor basketball hall of the Athens City Goudi Sports Center, where he talked, posed for photos and played basketball with athletes from the Special Olympics Hellas Basketball program, who had a great time picking up specialist tips as Vougioukas joined in with their practice.
After the session, Vougioukas said: “I am very pleased to participate in the ‘Basketball is Everywhere’ program by visiting Special Olympics Hellas.
“It is my honor to be the Ambassador of the program and I was delighted to accept this proposal at the beginning of the season. Today I have seen the great work being done by the athletes and their coaches, and I look forward to coming again. Special Olympics athletes offer generous love and enable you to share with them the joy of sports. I invite all the athletes I met here today to come and support the team at the OAKA.”
Vougioukas’s attendance was appreciated by the Ambassador and President of Special Olympics Hellas, Dionysios Kodellas, who said: “We are grateful for the support provided by Panathinaikos Superfoods, which has embraced and adopted our basketball team through the One Team program.
“Panathinaikos Superfoods has stood alongside our athletes both at the European Special Olympics Basketball Week and at other events, where players from the team have played with our athletes. This is the philosophy of the whole Special Olympics movement: the integration of people with intellectual disabilities into society through sport.
“I would like to express my gratitude to the Panathinaikos Superfoods administration, and to the sponsors, and give them the assurance that this very good partnership will continue in the future.”
One Team, supported by Turkish Airlines as the One Team Founding Patron and with the collaboration of Special Olympics as Proud Partner, uses basketball to achieve meaningful social impact in our communities across Europe and is supported by every club in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague and 7DAYS EuroCup.
Since its founding in 2012, the One Team program has already helped more than 14,000 participants through its various team-focussed projects.
