One Team, Euroleague Basketball's social responsibility program, does not only have the power to change individual lives – it can also transform entire families.
An example comes from Spain, where Godson has been part of KIROLBET Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz's One Team program for years (see his story here) and is now being joined by his sister, Goodnews.
Goodnews was born just after her brother first joined the One Team project a few years ago, and during her short lifetime she has keenly followed Godson's progression all the way into Baskonia's youth academy, regularly attending his practices and games. And now, just five years old, Goodnews has finally been able to follow in her brother's footsteps by joining the One Team program.
"She wants to follow her brother's example and become like him," said her mother, Philomina Ehiaghe. "Therefore, since the first moment her attitude has been incredible. During the first few practices, she found the exercises difficult. Because she is the youngest participant, she didn't get to the basket and didn't know the other participants.
"But she was very positive to overcome those early difficulties and, with the support of the coaches as practices passed, Goodnews gained more confidence and started to communicate more with her teammates. She doesn't care about being the youngest; she takes part in all the exercises with enthusiasm and attention. She never gets disappointed, and always continues trying."
One Team has effected a complete change for her whole family, allowing them to feel a real sense of inclusion in the city. The gratitude felt by the family was shown when they invited Baskonia's One Team staff to their wedding in November.
"Enjoying this day with the African community was an amazing emotional experience," said Dorleta de la Presa from the club's Fundacion 5+11. "We can say that One Team and basketball have changed the life of this family. It makes us feel proud of helping them."
One Team, supported by Turkish Airlines as the One Team Founding Patron and with the collaboration of Special Olympics as Proud Partner, uses basketball to achieve meaningful social impact in our communities across Europe and is supported by every club in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague and 7DAYS EuroCup.
Since its founding in 2012, the One Team program has already helped more than 19,000 participants through its various team-focused projects.
